Welcome to ROADBOSS’s first monthly e-newsletter, published to coincide with this week’s official launch of Heavy Vehicle Industry Australia’s (HVIA) ground-breaking new magazine.
Produced for industry by industry, ROADBOSS’s aim is simple: to fill a gap in the market for a magazine that tells the stories of the unsung heroes of our industry who take the risks and work the long hours to ensure there’s food on the supermarket shelves, petrol in the service station bowsers, life-saving equipment and supplies at our hospitals, parts to keep our machinery operating, and construction materials to build our roads, schools and shelter.
And, just as importantly, to present these stories with the care and to the high standard they deserve – intelligently written by experienced journalists with a passion for the industry, illustrated with beautiful photography and video by some of Australia’s best visual artists, and showcased using high-end design (and in the case of the print magazine, published on top-notch paper).

On both counts we believe ROADBOSS’s first issue delivers. As you’ll see from some of the key features shared in this e-newsletter, the magazine is, at 148 pages, fully loaded with cracking yarns on the icons, innovators and colourful characters that form the backbone of our world-class trucking industry.
In this e-newsletter Harrison Hunkin and photographer Sam Thies tells the amazing story of Australia’s cattle carrying kings, Fraser’s Livestock Transport, captured on a three-day journey following a convoy of six Kenworth T659s pulling road trains, B-triples and B-doubles transporting 600-odd head of cattle over 800km from cattle station to feedlot.
Exclusively, we also share the first of our exquisitely shot feature videos: our awesome road trip to the Pilbara with 85-year-old Mario Giacci, an Italian immigrant who has built not one but two of Australia’s most successful transport businesses, Giacci Bros and, more recently, bulk haulage operator MGM Bulk. It’ll make your eyes water!

On the lighter side, Cobey Bartels spends a weekend in the pits with legendary Melbourne-based Super Truck racer, Frank Amoroso, to see what makes the showman tick on and off the track. Does he live up to the incredible hype that surrounds him? We think so!
Finally, ROADBOSS digs deep into several key issues with major implications for trucking operators: the game-changing reforms to Australia’s antiquated axle load limits; and a recent, largely unreported, court ruling that found a heavy vehicle driver’s licence is no longer enough to demonstrate the required standard of competence under workplace health and safety laws.
We hope you enjoy the read. And if you thirst for more, jump on to the ROADBOSS website at www.roadboss.com.au to sign up for a complimentary subscription to the magazine!
