Harrison Hunkin recently drove from Melbourne to Brisbane with his mother-in-law and her new Hino 500 – and photographer Thomas Wielecki was there to capture all of the shenanigans
It’s a tight squeeze with three adults in the cab of this Hino 500. That along with all the luggage crammed in.
To my left, is friend and renowned photographer Thomas Wielecki, a known troublemaker, and to my right and behind the wheel is Alison Pocock. My mother-in-law.
Loud, eccentric, quirky, Alison is by most definitions…unique. Not necessarily because of her personality – which is most definitely unique and completely different to her daughter, but because of what she is and what she does.
She’s the self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Concrete’, with a career spanning 30 years in the game, and now runs her own small fleet of mini mixers. Nothing about her, except for the Hino backpack, would insinuate she’s ever been near a truck, let alone have six or seven of the things.

Nothing can prepare you for a 1,800km road trip jammed into a dickie seat from Melbourne to Brisbane next to your mother-in-law. Images: Thomas Wielecki
This Hino, a tipper she’ll convert into an agi, is the newest addition to her fleet – a steal she reckons, as she receives the keys from a ‘machine hire’ place in the ‘burbs of Melbourne.
The only problem is, her business – Brisbane Mini Mix, aint in the ‘burbs of Melbourne.
In years gone by, I’ve taken rickety busses through South America, travelled across the WA desert in a Chamberlain tractor, and even walked 1,200km across Europe.
But nothing could prepare you for this trip. 1,800km jammed into a dickie seat from Melbourne to Brisbane next to my mother-in-law.
